A few days ago Moose really started with a serious limp. He has a lot of arthritis and you can tell sometimes he is a little stiff and sore, but this was something different. We were really worried yesterday when we went to go see him in the morning and he could barely walk.
I would love to say I did not freak out and call the vet but I did.
Vets for horses are really expensive so most people will only call them for worst case scenarios.
Our Vet happened to be on vacation in New Zealand so Adrian and I toughed it out and came up with a plan of what to do. We did have some help thankfully.
We decided to check out a new feed store since we have been really unhappy with the service at the one we had been going to and since we will be bringing Moose home soon we need to decide where we will be getting his hay from. We met the nicest lady she is actually a neighbor down the road from us and lives in our valley. I told her what was going on with Moose and she told us step by step what to do. Aren't helpful people amazing. I mean really just a few purposeful words can really make such a difference in a persons life.
We soaked the swollen part of his leg which was the fetlock joint with a garden hose. We then applied a Kaolin poultice. Kaolin is like a type of clay really interesting stuff actually if you like science and geology. We then wrapped his leg in a cotton polo wrap, gave him some bute (horse ibuprofen).
But some nice pine shavings on the ground for him to bed down into to. And waited it out.
I actually slept terrible I couldn't wait to get over in the morning to see how he was doing.
The Great News is the swelling went way down and he was walking so much better today.
He was so happy when we went to see him and he had pine bedding all in his hair which meant he got to lay down in a nice soft bed and rest. We are learning that horses respond really well to some TLC.
The picture above is Moose drinking out of the hose. This is the bathing area at the ranch. We will be making one of these also at our home. We have an area all picked out to put down a concrete slab. A mud free area where Moose will take his baths.
Anna had a very full day of Girl Scouts today. She attended an international fair where her troop represented China. They did a great job and they all looked so cute. She got some nice badges from the event.
What is your favorite Girl Scout cookie?
Anna started selling cookies today. I stood with her out front of the local Movie theatre.
There are many rules now about selling and fundraising but if your mobile and keep moving you can sell anywhere. So we followed this and walked around this area.
Anna did great she sold 5 boxes. She ran out of Samoa's first closely followed by Thin Mints.
I really thought Thin Mints were the most popular but actually everyone was looking for the Samoa cookie. I am hoping she earned 2 patches today I have to check in with her troop leader on this.
Can you tell I love patches :) Yes I think I may be living vicariously through her hehehe.
(Anna in action who can say no to such a cute girl??)
Do you have any dreams? anything that you are wishing or hoping for in the future.
I have been dreaming about a horse for quite some time now.
(picture from google images)
Today I remembered my dreams and to not sell myself short. I was offered to adopt a horse recently but I turned it down. It was actually kind of a hard thing to do. It was a great horse, but I kind of have my heart set on a horse already. I want a horse that looks like the one above and I know the approximate age I would like it to be, as well as for it to be a gelding.
Patience is something we have to remember when we have a dream. Dreams can come true but not over night. Even more importantly to reach our dreams it is all about choices.
So today I turned down a nice horse and I am going to hang onto my dream for a little longer. Hold out with patience. And you know what I really think one day soon a pretty boy like the one above will be prancing in my yard.
All you dreams can come true, if you have the courage to pursue them.

This was MY "take home" from your post, Heather: "a few purposeful words can really make such a difference in a persons life".
ReplyDeleteI will be passing up the Thin Mints and Samoan's this year - both my favorites. Equally. Just don't need them calorically OR financially. (Is "calorically" a word????)
Mr. Disney said it best Heather!
ReplyDeleteAs to my own dreams, I find that as long as they don't come true, I am at my happiest...It is the yearning and searching I love best! Once obtained, all the mystery is gone and the novelty quickly wears off...
All the best,
I think I still have 4 boxes of samoas still in my desk drawer.....I buy a lot when all thelittle girls come to my classroom to sell. This post was great...such a fun variety of things going on for you and the family. So glad Moose is better...you are such a good mom's. Your weather looks awesome.....thinking of Adrian and hoping job situation is well.
ReplyDeleteI am definitely a Thin Mint nut... I have been known to have quite a weakness for buying many boxes when I get any where close to a girl scout; of course I wouldn't pass up a box of Samoas either, they are awesome.
ReplyDeleteIs Moose feeling better after the treatment?
I hope you will be able to have that dream horse one of these days. I agree with Walt (He was always one of my heroes) it is important to dream,
and it does require courage to pursue them.
Love and Blessings,
Pam
