I needed a change well actually I need a bunch of change lol!! So I chopped off my locks. Feels great!! Sometimes change is a much needed thing... and it can feel really good.
Some of you might remember me being sick last summer with the allergic reaction and dermatitis. We think we may have finally found the culprit.
Let me introduce you to Laurel Sumac. This plant contains the same oils as found in the poisonous oak. The magic word Urushiol. Now there seems to be a lot of misleading information about this plant. I read somewhere that this is not as toxic as poisonous oak because it lacks the same amount of urushiol. Here is my stance on this plant if you are walking by this plant and brush into it chances are it is not going to bother you. But if you decide to chop this plant down and then pick up the branches with your bare arms to pile in the yard(yes I may have done this) I would say watch out.
It is possible that I am just allergic to this plant and so any contact would bother me. But for a plant that lacks urushiol? I am not so sure about the person who stated this. Maybe they have read about the plant but have not studied it hands on. When you cut it you can see the urushiol literally rush to the end of the piece you cut off.
Thankfully we only have a few spots of this left. We recently hired someone to clear our land for the horses and get rid of this sumac. Adrian is working on getting rid of the last few bits of it around where the horses will be.
Just my opinion if you know you are sensitive or allergic to ivy, and oak I would say avoid the Laurel Sumac you find here in Southern California as well.
Here are some snapshots of our land that we just cleared. Now we are looking for a company that sells corrals and roofs.
This is where the corrals are going to go. And behind all this a tack shed.
Down there in the dirt area will be the round pen and then straight through that brush we are going to have someone cut a trail that leads to our dirt road so we have another loop for riding. You can't really tell in the picture but this is a really steep drop down to the dirt.
This area slopes down and then levels out this will be the pasture once we dig out all those stumps and fence it.
That flat area out there Adrian is going to lay out big patio stones and he wants to build a pergola for a nice place to eat outside. And see that tall tree that is that sumac see how big it can get. Adrian is going to chop that down. We will have to plant a more skin friendly tree for shade.
Next time I show pictures of the yard Moose will be there!!

Your new hair cut is fresh and cute and totally adorable like you! How awful about that plant, yuk get rid of it all. Your spot looks picture perfect.
ReplyDeleteXXOO
Your hair looks fantastic, bet you feel way more confident and ready to deal with those unpleasant ladies now!
ReplyDeleteThank goodness you've found the reason behind that awful allergy, you must feel better already! x
Love your new haircut, Heather. Your hair always looks nice to me:)
ReplyDeleteSo glad you have found the culprit of your skin rash last year. I know that was a difficult time for you. It must be a relief to have discovered what the cause was.
Your property is just so gorgeous! The views you have are just breathtaking!
How cute your new haircut looks! I am so glad that you found the culprit to your nasty skin rash. I recently had a bad case of hives, so I know how bad a skin problem can be. We don't have any of those plants in our yard, but it sounds like a good one for me to stay away from! Thanks for the warning.
ReplyDeleteI like it! (Haircut) Sometimes I'm tempted to try bangs myself!
ReplyDeleteOooh I love your new haircut you gorgeous woman!!! You look so fresh and frisky:). I dearly hope the sumac has been correctly identified as the problem plant and you have no further problems this summer. xoxo
ReplyDeleteGreat haircut on you! I love it.
ReplyDeleteYAY....I am so glad you possibly found the culprit!
Hi Heather!! Your hair looks amazing-it's a great style and really suits you well! Well done to you all for clearing your land so well and it's great you've identified the problem plant too. Sorry to hear about Moose and hoping he is well on the road of recovery! Have a good week ahead! xxx

Love the Hair Cut. It always helps doesn't it? I know I am in need... I feel very grey and droopy... This is always the time I start having a go at my hair myself with a pair of scissors, and then always wish I had just gone ahead and gotten it cut. Oh well. Love all the pictures of your land. It is very pretty. Your plans sound wonderful, and I look forward to seeing Moose at home with you, in his own corral and pasture. It looks like you are already getting some green grass; I can't wait to see that around here.
ReplyDeleteLove and Blessings,
Pam
Your hair looks great! That is a good thing you narrowed down the allergy so you will know what to avoid from now on :-) Your yard is really looking good and I bet it will come together nicely. Been missing the sunshine here, its been cloudy and grey and cold and snowy and both my girls are sick. Can't wait for spring to arrive!!
ReplyDeleteHave an awesome day!

Dear Heather,
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of laurel sumac, but I know there is a poison sumac that is really bad. I do hope that you won't have another run-in with it this year! Your haircut is very pretty, and it looks like you all have your hands full with yard work. :) It's the most rewarding thing ever, though, isn't it?
Love,
Marqueta
You look adorable! How exciting it will be to bring Mooses home.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone else. Your hair looks very nice. Hope all your building plans go off without a hitch.
