Home Schooling through High school

The boys are away this weekend for a youth retreat with church. So I thought it would be a good time to sit down with my laptop and some reading resources to refresh my ideas on homeschooling through high school.

This year we decided to use some standard high school text books something we have never done before. And needless to say this is not working very well for us. I have not decided yet how I want to change things around but since we are in the second semester and halfway through these books I am thinking we will stick it out and I will come up with some ways to supplement to make it more interesting and less dry for them.

A good resource for homeschool ideas is over at the Harmony Art Mom website. I really appreciate all the details this Mom has put into her blog over the years it has been so helpful for me especially since we moved to California were it has been much harder to find other Mom's and Homeschooling Families to link up with. It really is helpful to see what other families are doing.  And she has an amazing website filled with lots of good and useful information.

My daughters notebook page from this week.

Harmony Art Mom wrote another great page on note booking through high school.  I really wish I would have seen this back in September. Note booking is something our family really loves to do. But when we got to high school I stopped not knowing how to really progress with this. I was thrilled to find this resource and will definitely bring note booking back for the boys.

Here is another link for some very nice homeschool planning pages. These are from Money Saving Mom.com

Well I have lots of ideas and I am off to see what I can pull together and come up with.

  2. Such a responsibility you're shouldering! It will be interesting to watch what these young men of yours do vocationally. They sure are growing up.

  3. Coleman Hawkins had it right Heather! It is not easy to go the way you chose but you are not alone, He is with you all the way!
Any chance College students near you (local campus?) could lend a hand in tutoring? That's the way we did for our son when outside help was needed.
    The boys are looking good!
    All the best,

    1. It's funny you say that my son just told me the youth pastor at church teaches english and tutors ... so if we keep having trouble I may just do that ~Thanks for all the encouragement Noelle :)

  4. Dear Heather,

I have discovered, too, that "real" textbooks are a drag for homeschoolers. AnnaMarie is not enjoying her biology book right now!

I am sure that your children will breeze through whatever is thrown at them; they are all amazing.

    Love,

  5. Now why aren't schools teaching my kids about Louis Armstrong?!! I guess that's the thing that keeps you coming back to homeschooling ... you have control over the amazing things they can learn - you are parent and teacher all rolled in one whereas parents of school children can only teach in fits and starts. You're doing an amazing job Heather xoxo

    1. Ha ha we like to learn about all the good stuff in this house. I grew up with a Jazz musician in my home so I have a good appreciation for music that I love to share with my kids. Thank you so much for the encouragement it means a lot :) xoxo Heather

  9. Praying that you find the right way for your guys. That is the beauty of homeschooling isn't it? You can always change and do what's best for your students/children! We didn't do high school the way I did in PS, we went outside of textbooks and learned so much more than any textbook could teach. It was worth it! Looks like you've found a great resource to help you decide what to do! Good for you Heather! Hugs!

  10. we had a lot of fun home schooling through high school. We did our own thing as usual. I pick and chose my resources that's how we roll around here like a loose tumbleweed.
